NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Fort Worth artist Mark Reese in Kaleidoscope of the Mind. The exhibition will open on December 29, 2016 and run through January 18, 2017 with an opening reception on Thursday, December 29 from 6-8 PM.
Mark Reese describes his expressive acrylic paintings as his "sanctuary." Deeply emotional and boldly symbolic, Reese's work is an articulation of the visceral and the personal. He paints bowed figures and grinning faces; a faceless man with a gaping wound; a disembodied heart rising out of the gloom. He focuses on the physical and the most intense expression of human feeling possible. Each piece is edited into a pure shot of a chosen emotion.
Reese shrouds his works in darkness, often choosing nothing but a murky black for his backgrounds and depicting his figures in blood-red or indigo. His shadows have immense depth, yet ultimately they strip the human subject of context and emphasize their symbolic meaning. Reese applies acrylic paint thickly to create texture and an organic feel, and frequently incorporates a dripping technique. His brushstrokes and shapes flow smoothly into one another.
Reese was born in Fort Worth, Texas and continues to live there today. He has shown his work in and around the area in both traditional and permanent exhibitions.

About the Exhibition
Kaleidoscope of the Mind: Messages From The Cutting Edge
Agora Gallery begins the new year with Kaleidoscope of the Mind, an illuminating expedition into the latest in contemporary art. The exhibition showcases both abstract and surreal-tinged images, with an emphasis on painting. The most striking thing about all six participants is their willingness to experiment. One artist combines frenzied splashes of paint with precise compositional elements, and executes the entire painting while suspended on a catwalk above it. Another painter depicts physical and emotional pain with slashes in the canvas itself. A mixed-media artist juxtaposes the orderliness of silky, painted writing with the primal chaos of resin, resulting in pieces of unusual visual depth. There is one purely representational artist in the exhibition, whose oils dance with such vibrant and unexpected colors that they seem to come from a brighter reality than ours. Kaleidoscope of the Mind is a beautifully candid, cohesive exhibition of the freshest ideas most skillfully brought to life.
