Get ready boys and girls, because Miley Cyrus' Gypsy Heart Tour is coming to Australia! For the first time, the former Disney Channel songstress is coming to this great land. The tour kicked off at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane on June 21st. Daring costumes and fabulous stage sets come together to give you a show you will not soon forget.
Miley is all grown up. She has shed the remaining bits of her cutesy image to reveal a rebellious young woman, undaunted by people's expectations of her. Some fans might be unpleasantly surprised by the transition, but like it or not, it is happening. The transformation began with the launch of her music video "Can't Be Tamed", where she represented a bird breaking out of her cage forever. The raunchy dance moves, along with the aggressive overall tone of the song, sent a very clear message. Her lack of subtlety was deliberate, as she continues to break down the boundaries set by a childhood spent under Disney Channel's management.
Nevertheless, her live performance of Can't Be Tamed on tour is just as shocking as the video. The fans squealed with delight when the intro music began, and as she began to sing it became obvious who is in charge now. The song was followed by performances of other popular tracks, such as The Climb, Seven Things and When I Look at You. You can expect to hear every song on the new album as well as some old favourites.
Her previous shows accommodated her younger audience, whereas this tour is specifically designed to convey the fact that she is no longer a child. If you have small children, be aware of this before you buy tickets. This is in every way a grown-up show, and there are no considerations made toward her younger, more impressionable audience. Her costumes are skimpy and sexualised, and the choreography follows suit.
This is not to trivialise Miley's innate talent. Her singing and song writing skill are obvious to anyone who takes the time to listen to her music. In addition, her ability to entertain is unparalleled. She can captivate an audience for a continuous hour, something not easily achieved with the short attention span of today's fans. One might argue that shiny costumes and sexy choreography are almost a necessity to give the audience what they expect from a budding young starlet.
After Brisbane, the Gypsy Heart tour went on to Melbourne. Miley performed at the Melbourne Rod Laver Arena on 23 June. The tour is moving on to Sydney on Sunday 26 June and will perform at the Sydney Acer Arena.
