From the medieval to renaissance to the modern style, the shirt has traveled a long road and evolved along the way from being loose or tight fitting, with ruffled collars and cuffs to the current style.

There is a range of shirts to choose from varying in sizes, styles, colours, patterns, designs and stitches but the basics of a shirt is that it must fit well without being too loose or too  tight. Today, dress shirts for men are chosen to fit well around the neck and have the right sleeve length. Only a select group can afford to go in for tailor-made fitted dress shirts. Most men today buy shirts off the rack and even in this segment, there is a range of styles to suit virtually all tastes and preferences. Mens dress shirts are available in high street stores and from exclusive designer brands, ranging in cost from low to high.
Most manufacturers make custom shirts for men to suit basic body types: athletic or slim fit, regular and full. The athletic type is close fitting and preferred by most men. The regular shirt is somewhat looser and is preferred by men who want more comfort. Men with a heavier physique can choose the full shirt that is a little longer down the waist and also wider. Specific stores stock may even larger plus-sizes for extra large men.
When people look at a man, they look at his dress shirt and specifically at his collars, shirt pocket and cuffs. One can buy shirts with different collar types such as straight down, spread collar, button down collar, club type, tab type or spread type. One should select the right collar type in keeping with his neck and face structure. Cuffs are available in French or double style that is longer than the standard cuff and can be  folded back. The barrel cuff is also known as the button cuff with one  or more buttons to fit wrist thicknesses. The other style that allows closing with buttons or cufflinks is the convertible. Two pockets indicate it is a casual style shirt while formal shirts will have only one pocket. More casual shirts or festive shirts may have pockets with flaps and half sleeves instead of full sleeves.
