Sculptor Nora Pineda creates stunning stoneware pieces that could have sprung naturally from the sands of the artist's native California. Pineda depicts animals and people as undulating shapes comprising curves that would not look out of place either in an Art Nouveau painting or a Surrealist drawing. Her pieces luxuriate in roundness: every surface curves away from the viewer,Reinventing the Art of Stoneware: Nora Pineda Articles seemingly to stretch on forever just out of view.

Pineda often uses fiery oranges and warm brown tones, referencing everything from sandstone to volcanic rock. However, her pieces serve to expand the definition of "earth tones" to include deep purples, vivacious blues, and even a hint of iridescence, all without losing their rich character. She simplifies all her compositions, so that limbs get sucked back into the body, details become pared down into simple surface texture, and only the boldest curves of the body remain.

Pineda was born in Bakersfield, California and counts both Southwestern art and her Mexican heritage as major influences in her work. She is also a massage therapist, spiritual counselor, and healing energy worker.

About the Exhibition

Sensorial Realities

Agora Gallery's new group exhibition Sensorial Realities offers nine different voyages into new and challenging worlds. Among the paintings, mixed-media works, ceramics, and sculptures included, there are stimulating explorations of landscape, narrative, abstraction, and portraiture. One painter creates outdoor scenes out of a jungle of thick, unbroken brushstrokes that pulse with the loud colors of summer in bloom. Another builds quietly intense psychological scenes out of isolated figures. A third toggles between sensual realism and an abstraction that depends simply on the perspective zooming in and out. With such thoughtful technical experimentation and flawless execution, Sensorial Realities showcases artists operating at their smartest and most provocative level.
