Sacred and Profane Love is a representative work by Italian Renaissance master Tiziano Vecellio who was also known as Titian. Tiziano Vecellio was an famous Italian painter and he played an important role in Venetian school during the 16th century. He was born in Venice. In his middle age, his painting style was meticulous and powerful with bright color. In his later years,Sacred and Profane Love Articles his handwriting was bold and unconstrained and the tones were pure and changeable. Titian had made a great impact on the development of the late European painting in oil painting techniques,

The first remarkable works that marked his personal painting style became mature is Sacred and Profane Love (1512 - 1515). In this painting, two females that respectively symbolized sacred love and profane love stayed on both sides of the picture. The background of each two women is a little different. The background of the sacred love (on the left) is hill and village, and that of profane love is lake and towns. They seem to be connected closely with the stone and trees in the foreground.

Two women are portrayed exceedingly well: sacred love is manifested as seriously dressed woman, while profane love is a nude lady. Each of them is leaning and standing at one side of the central classical sarcophagus pool, stands in stark contrast. The nude lady is healthy, beautiful and glamorous, which can be regarded as the best work that reflects the female beauty in the Renaissance art.

Sacred and Profane Love was painted in about 1514. It is said that this painting was commissioned by Niccolò Aurelio to celebrate his new marriage. Therefore, it seems that one of two women on the picture is the bride and the other is the Venus. Titian's artistic achievement had a great influence throughout the entire 16th century. His works were mainly portraits, religious paintings and mythological paintings. We can say that his portrait was a mirror of Venetian society of the 16th century.
