The Beatles are well-documented; not much is left to state about them. They were possibly the most key group in the history of rock and roll music,The Beatles: Rock And Roll’s Most Venerated Act Articles and the very mention of their name recalls vivid imagery and memories for a great many people. Their music won over an entire age group of listeners, and dominated the collective consciousness in nations throughout the Western world during the 1960’s. The high caliber and novelty of their music dwarfed their personalities, which were nevertheless quite prominent. Beatles vinyl records are still valuable and regularly fetch high prices on the open market, a true testament to their legacy and lasting popularity.

John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, from northern England, came together to form the band.  They helped to kick off the movement commonly referred to as the “British Invasion”, which involved a flood of rock music from the United Kingdom into the North American market in the early 1960’s and the relatively sudden heightened popularity of the associated acts and the British rock scene in general. The Beatles, though, did not only help in the movement’s origination; they stayed at the cutting edge of the entire rock genre for the whole of their time as a band. The impact they had on future rock styles was much greater than that of most of their peers

Over the course of their career, the Beatles altered their sound from one informed by vocal and pop music to one rooted in folk revival to one heavy on experimentalism and working against conventions. The band was, at the close of the ‘60’s, a unpredictable unit which took bits from rock’s past and mixed them up in creative ways, and seemed nothing like their prior pop-oriented selves.

Unlike many bands, who have a select number of big hits associated with them by the casual listener, the Beatles put out such a multitude of popular songs in so many styles that it is difficult to pick any small number that trump others in one’s mind. From the pop anthems “She Loves You”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, and “A Hard Day’s Night”, to the psychedelic “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, to the more guitar-oriented rock of tunes like “Helter Skelter”, to the gospel-inflected “Let it Be”, the group produced a kaleidoscopic array of sounds attached to inspired lyrics and vocals.

Quite lasting memories are what this unique British quartet have given us. To own record albums of Beatles music is to own pieces of music history, memorabilia of perhaps the greatest musical group of modern times, and even having tape or CD copies of the music can make one feel as though they are a part of an important club. The group’s music has had exceptional staying power, and has long outlasted the band itself, as well as Lennon and Harrison, who left this earth some years ago. The four boys from Liverpool will always be with us.
