After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery,
Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) invites a film crew to document
his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested
when a desperate plea from the father of a possessed girl (Ashley Bell)
brings him face to face with the devil himself.
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the
Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine
"exorcism" on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist,
Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort,
certain his teenage daughter Nell is possessed by a demon who must be
exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy.
Buckling
under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate
believers with their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a
confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon arriving
at the already blood drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing
could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there. Now, too
late to turn back, Reverend Marcus' own beliefs are shaken to the core
when he and his crew must find a way to save Nell – and themselves –
before it is too late.

Last Exorcism is a possession horror in the tradition of The Exorcist,
but shot in the documentary style of Paranormal Activity, The Blair
Witch Project, or if you really want to delve back into the archives,
Umberto Lenzi's grotty man-eating epic Cannibal Ferox.
The
recently unveiled trailer shown here is the first glimpse we've had of
The Last Exorcism, directed by Daniel Stamm, whose last movie was the
disturbing A Necessary Death in 2008.
Set on a dilapidated
Louisiana farm, Reverend Cotton Marcus agrees to perform one final
exorcism on a possessed teenager. Desperate for a bit of cash, Marcus
consents to carry out his rites in front of a documentary crew, and the
gory, shadowy events shown here is some of the resulting footage.
The
trailer is crammed with plenty of familiar horror movie tropes -
aggressive backwater yokels and screaming, lank-haired women, but
Stamm's previous form could make The Last Exorcism a late summer
fright-fest worth keeping an eye on.
The Last Exorcism is due for
release on 27 August.
