Many apartment homes have recently taken it upon themselves to make their apartment homes more “green”. Meaning they will take steps in their construction process to use materials that are less harmful on the environment. Also,How Apartment Complexes are Going Green Today Articles many apartment homes will also be constructed with the latest in amenities and features that use less energy and are more environmentally friendly.

Many AMLI  apartment communities around the country are not only communicating with each other, but with their residents with ways that they can cut down on their energy usage and if they can, start recycling too.

The less each resident uses electricity and water the more there is to go around for everyone else. There are many ways that apartment communities can play a role in help to reduce consumption of non-renewable energy sources.

Energy Efficient Light-bulbs

Normal light bulbs use more energy and don’t last as long as many energy efficient bulbs today. By apartment communities installing these light-bulbs in their apartment homes it not only helps save energy but also reduces the cost for the apartment renters that must pay the monthly energy bills.

Installation of Green Roofs

A green roof is a roof on top of a roof. It includes a water proofing and root repellent system,  plants that are light and therefore do not weight much, and a drainage system. In other words a green roof will create a living green space on top of your roof.  Advantages in using green roofs include the ability for plants to shade and thereby cause a cooling effect. Many homeowners and apartment renters may therefore not have to use as much air conditioning as they are used to.

Green roofing also extends the life of your roof and provides good sound insulation as well.

Installation of Programmable Thermostats

When programmable thermostats are installed in the apartment homes, renters can adjust the temperatures based upon their needs. If you travel on vacation you can leave the temperature a little higher than you are used to. Also you can program the temperature to increase a few degrees at night while you are sleeping. A few degrees can go a long way into decreasing your electricity bill.

The majority of AMLI apartment communities are also installing recycling programs at 100% of the communities.  Many apartment communities will also install energy efficient appliances including dishwasher and refrigerators that are environmentally friendly.

There are also many things you can do on your own which can help reduce your costs and energy usage today. Remember to turn your lights off when you leave your apartment home. Or if you are home and are not using a certain room turn off those lights too.

Start timing your showers. Many people don't realize how much time they actually shower for. The shorter you use the showers the more water you will save.
