Appliances

Focus on the wear and tear. Examine the items including the refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher. Make sure the operate correctly. How old do they look? Are they energy efficient? 

If they are not energy efficient you may expect you bills to be higher than those that save more energy.

Storage

Many developers and apartment builders are aware that renters have a lot of personal stuff. And apartment homes sometimes don’t provide enough space for all of your belongings. Check the closet space and also other storage areas Many apartments have a storage closet outside on your balcony. Many will also provide extra storage facilities on-site for a fee.

Noise

This can be the most overlooked item in an apartment search and can ruin your stay while your living at the property.  Open the doors and windows of the apartment home you tour. Listen for street noise, cars going back and forth, and construction. 

Also don’t be shy about asking other residents about noise levels coming from within the community at night.  

The Floor-Plan

Many renters simply ask about the square footage and make an assessment about the home from this aspect. But examine the entire space in the apartment home. How will you use the furniture. Where will you place your bed in the room. Look for phone and cable jacks too. Sometimes you will be forced to place the television in a certain space.
