The prison is run by the Federal government of the United States. In its cells are kept some of the most dangerous criminals in the country.

Many of these men were arrested by the agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the famous G-men. Alcatraz is also known as "The Rock." Escape from The Rock is almost impossible. The prisoners are closely guarded, and the waters around Alcatraz are patrolled regularly. Even if a prisoner could escape the guards and the patrol, he would likely drown in the rough waters around the island.
