Antioch is the name of one of the oldest cities on earth. It is in southeast Turkey, and is about 20 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. Antioch was founded about 300 B.C. In its early days it was a most magnificent city, with a population of about 300,000, and rivaled Rome in splendor and beauty.

It was in Antioch that the followers of Jesus first came to be called Christians. Antioch is mentioned in the New Testament, in the Book of Acts. The city has been captured and partly destroyed by its enemies several times, and earthquakes nearly destroyed it in 1872, so very little remains of the ancient city except the ruins of some of the walls and aqueducts, which carried water into the city. Today there is only a small city of about 30,000 people where the ancient city stood.
