In 1996 Canadian, Maria Rocco and Italian, Lucia Mingarelli put their heads and their hearts together to create what has become the leading children’s language school in Florence. Maria went to university in her hometown Toronto where she earned her first Degree in French and Italian Languages and a second Degree in Education.

ENGLISH SUMMER CAMPSSummer camps at Canadian Island offer an exciting and educational vacation to Italian and foreign kids alike. There is no escape to absorbing bits and pieces of the English language. In fact, they don’t even notice they are picking it up as they go along. Every activity takes place in English, from songs and games to eating and getting changed for the pool! Every day is an adventure for the campers at Canadian Island!Canadian Island Summer Camp offers a cultural experience for the campers as well. They are exposed, often for the first time, to adults and other children from different cultural backgrounds and with different mother tongues. This adds yet another growing experience for children. Have a look at our various programs and let us know what best suits your child’s needs.ENGLISH COURSESAll of our classes have a maximum of eight students, therefore the teacher builds a rapport with the students and a nurturing atmosphere is created. Students grow to love their teachers and Canadian Island becomes a second home for so many. The teachers at Canadian Island are native English speakers, university graduates and Certified ESL instructors specializing in the education of children. Our mentor and Director, Maria Rocco was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. She is the rock upon which Canadian Island was built. Her enthusiasm and charisma in teaching children is like no other. She earned herself two university degrees in Canada and participated in several English as a Second Language Workshops in Toronto.

Canada is renowned for its teaching methods, especially in the area of ESL and Maria has very successfully introduced some of those innovative teaching techniques to children in Florence.

Charlotte Duclaux, was born and raised in Ohio, USA. She’s been with Canadian Island year round now since 2002 and she’s been at our summer camps since 1998. Charlotte has a degree in Education as well as a Masters in ESL Teaching. She has been fundamental in creating Canadian Island’s curriculum and continues to be a fountain of inspiration for the entire staff.

A small child’s curiosity is without boundaries. At Canadian Island we believe it is essential to encourage their sense of wonder about the world around them. We are committed to developing a child’s self-esteem through cooperative play. In a safe and nurturing environment, the children at Canadian Island not only learn English but so many other important skills.
