Every day, you hear about people in your area falling victim to theft, burglary, and home invasions. Could this have been avoided?

Security experts say that it CAN; and they boast that the best way for homeowners to protect their personal property (and family) is to install a burglar alarm. However, many people are confused about how a burglar alarm works.

Essentially, home security systems and burglar alarms are designed to alert both the homeowner (if they are home) and the security company (if your alarm is monitored) that trouble is on the horizon.

Most burglar alarms work by utilizing motion detector technology inside and outside the home. For instance, a great deterrent outside your home is to install motion-censored lights that will go on when they sense movement. While the neighborhood stray dog and the occasional deer will likely trip these lights into action – burglars will as well. This is the first phase of protection when you install a reputable St. Louis security systems, which uses lights and motion detectors to alert you to trouble.

The next layer of protection comes from having burglar alarms installed on all accessible doors and windows. When you are in the home, you can set the alarms and know that if a door or window is opened, the alarm will be activated. It essentially says, “Leave NOW or the cops will be coming!” And if you are not home and choose to have your alarm system monitored, the police will be called and sent to your home to check things out.

You can also find motion detectors that will sound lights or alarms if movement is detected. However, unless you have the specific knowledge and tools to install the system, you might come out better allowing professionals to do it.

One problem that homeowners run into, especially with burglar alarms and home security systems that utilize motion detectors, is interference from pets. If you have pets in and around your home, it doesn’t mean that utilizing motion detectors is out of the question. In fact, some of today’s higher quality alarm systems allow the homeowner to install systems that can detect approximate weights and sizes of the perpetrator making them more accurate with fewer false alarms.
