It is always smart to have health insurance coverage. A good sized percentage of uninsured Americans are college students. There are reasons why many of these people don't have insurance coverage.

It is always smart to have health insurance coverage. A good sized percentage of uninsured Americans are college students. There are reasons why many of these people don't have insurance coverage. But the argument is that if colleges require this coverage it will have a positive effect on many different levels. One thing about having the colleges require the coverage would mean that they would have to provide it.

If it was a requirement then there would be ways to make it easily available. A premium could be put into the same category as tuition. Besides it will be low cost anyway because of all the students. That would make for a good group rate.

A student that has insurance coverage while at school is much more likely to be healthier and to finish school. These are the ones that graduate and then get jobs that pay taxes rather than being a drain on the system. The 30% of students that have no insurance are the ones that will be most likely to stop their schooling and rack up some medical debt.

With having this insurance at colleges and universities it opens the doors to more access to specialty services by extending services. These are medical as well as behavioral. It would be geared to fit into what ever medical services that are already in place.

College is expensive and that is why there are so many different creative ways to pay for it. These same creative methods could be used to cover required health insurance as well. It would give people that can't afford health care a way of getting it and that is a very positive plan.
