The State of Florida requires a certain amount of coverage in order to register and drive a car in Florida. You can often find cheap auto insurance in Florida by only buying minimal coverage.

Understand minimum coverage is not adequate coverage,When You Need SR22 and FR44 Auto Insurance in Florida Articles but if you just need something to get on the road, you can get the $10k Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10k Property Damage Liability (PDL). It will give you cheap auto insurance in Florida until you can get something better.

•    It won’t cover your car, and if you cause an accident you will be responsible for any damage over $10k.
•    If the other driver is seriously injured, you will be responsible to pay all his medical bills over his or her $10k PIP.
•    Be aware it would be to your advantage to increase your protection as soon as you are able.

SR22

There are some circumstances that you will be required to carry an SR22 or FR44 auto insurance. This typically occurs out of reaction to an event in which the State of Florida feels there is an increased risk for you to injure someone. Perhaps you had an accident, you were caught recklessly driving, or you were convicted of a DUI. In any of these situations, Florida may require you to carry Bodily Injury Liability (BIL). This will make it more difficult to find cheap auto insurance in Florida, but you will have better protection.

•    BIL coverage will pay out up to the limit for injury you cause to another person in an auto accident. The minimum requirement is $10k.
•    If you are required to have this coverage, you must let your insurance company know so they can process the SR22 filing and can alert Florida to the fact you do have the proper coverage.
•    The SR22 obligates the insurance company to notify the State of Florida if you end, cancel, non-renew, or stop paying for coverage. If this is the case, you will have to prove you had insurance with other cheap auto insurance in Florida or risk fines and license or registration suspensions.

FR44

If you have been convicted of a DUI, you will be required BIL, also. However, you will be required to carry a minimum of $100k. You are a bigger risk to other motorists if you decide to drink and drive again. In this case, rather than an SR22 filing, your insurance company will need to file an FR44. It works exactly the same way as an SR22, but you have to maintain the BIL of $100k.

The FR44 and $100k BIL will make it nearly impossible to find cheap auto insurance in Florida. However, the good news is when your DUI falls off the radar of your insurance company, maintaining those high BIL limits will provide your big discounts to keep them high once you qualify for low-risk and standard car insurance.
