Wide Array Of Virgin Islands Real Estate Available
There's a great range of Virgin Islands Real Estate available. Some of the people invest in real-estate on these tropical isles so as to make it their first home-base. Others purchase property to be used as holiday rentals or vacation get-aways.
These isles are part of the Leeward chain, and form the boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The north-eastern isles are part of the British crown. They include the main isles of Tortola, Virgin-Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, as well as 50 smaller islets. The south-western isles are United States territories. These include St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas.
These isles were named by Christopher Columbus in honor of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. The first native inhabitants were the Arawak, Cermic and Carib. After the arrival of European sailors, their populations were decimated by disease and the harsh conditions of slavery.
European colonists re-populated the isles after the destruction of the natives. They established sugar and tobacco plantations. Slaves were imported from Africa to work in the fields. The plantations are gone and slavery has been abolished, but many many people remained. Most of today's inhabitants are the descendants of African slaves.
The United States dollar is the official currency of all the isles, including those that are part of Great Britain. Drivers operate motor vehicles along the left side of roadways, but steering wheels are typically on the left side (common for drive-on-the-right locations). English is the official language. However, a local dialect of Creole is spoken by many natives.
The region's traditional cuisine is hearty and spicy. The main food staple is fungi, which is pronounced fun-gee. It consists of cornmeal boiled into a thick paste with okra, and is usually eaten with fish. Callaloo is a thick stew made from callaloo leaves, okra and a variety of meat. Roti is another popular native dish. It is made from curried vegetables and meat wrapped in very thin dough. Local fruits include tamarinds, genip, sea grapes, papaya, soursop, mango and sugar apples. Bush tea is the most popular local drink. It's an herbal tea made from native plants, such as lemongrass, and served hot.
The main religion is Christianity, especially Roman Catholic. As on many Caribbean islands, there is also a contingent of Rastafari. A small portion of the population identifies with the Jewish and Muslim religions.
The wide range of Virgin Islands Real Estate can open the door to healthy living in an exotic location. There are properties available to meet all budgets.
