We buy fresh fruits,Eat fresh groceries always? Articles vegetables to stay healthy but often are storage techniques don’t keep them fresh till we consume. With our fast paced lives all the food items we eat are stored under refrigeration at least 24 to 48 hours before consumption.

And so many a times we pick the fresh fruits, vegetables and dump them in plastic sacks inside the refrigerator. And often overlook that all the freshness is lost? Confused about how this really happens? We often overlook how important storage is to keep fruits, vegetables fresh till we consume them; we must avoid storing groceries in plastic sacks.

But that’s not true at all in fact; we are promoting a contaminated environment. Mostly all the vital freshness is lost within plastic sacks within our refrigerators and we throw the fruits, vegetables after removing them, thinking that they were spoiled due to chemicals which are sprayed on them. But the real reason is plastic sacks as within them microbial activity breeds as there is a deficiency of oxygen and the spoilage begins.

So it is very important to eat fresh fruits and vegetables to remove them from plastic sacks and store in air tight containers, after properly washing and cleaning them. Some of the important ways to store food items appropriately in alternatives to plastic sacks are listed below. The benefit of altering plastic sacks and adopting other simple techniques can keep all the fruits and vegetables you eat always fresh and healthy always.

Air tight Container: They are the best, but before storing fruits, vegetables in them always clean them, cut them and then store. They are essentials for every refrigerator as they organise all the food items, for better maintenance you should label them and once the stored food is over clean the container dry them and then reuse. Spring onions can be smelly if left open and may become damp if not used quickly, so the best way to store them is in air tight containers.

Fridge bags: As they are specially made for refrigerators, they are usually made from fine plastic threads and have a zip on the top to easily remove and store vegetables. They are ideal for storing leafy vegetables like spinach, fenugreek etc. but ensure that you clean and store them.

Vinegar: As strange as it sounds, simply removing the fruits and vegetables out of plastic sacks can help in keeping them fresh. Sometimes dipping berries in a dilute solution of vinegar can help them stay fresh for three to four days. After dipping they must be dried and then stored in a container.

Foil: We often cut a little extra salad, while making sandwiches- often tomato or onions are left over wrapping them in tin foil is the best way to keep them fresh for a day or two. It is also an ideal way to store grated fruits, vegetables and cheese.
