In a similar vein, spiders can be quite prevalent in a dirty kitchen. Why? Because other insects are attracted to the left-out food. Refrain from leaving uncovered food strewn about your house, clean food and drink spills thoroughly, and regularly wipe down your counters. General cleanliness goes a long way in preventing the presence of unwanted bugs and spiders.
Like most animals spiders enjoy a nice, safe tucked away space to nest. If you have a dirty room with clothes littering the floor, the warm darkness your soiled laundry provides is a perfect environment for spiders to hide underneath. Not only do they feel comfortable there, but it provides them a safe passage route from one side of your room to the other, which encourages them to spread out. Maintain a tidy room and they’ll have fewer places to hide.
The unfortunate and frustrating reality of infestations is that the majority of times, the pests waltzed right in through your doors or windows. Ill-fitting windowsills provide little resistance to a spider interested in visiting your home, so make sure that your windows are sealed properly. Likewise, doors with large gaps make your house very accessible, so consider installing some weather stripping around the edges to prevent more invasions.
If you happen to find webbing with or without spiders on it, make sure to vacuum the area thoroughly. Much like fleas, if you fail to terminate the egg sacs then you will have a perpetual problem on your hands. You can spot the egg sacs by their cocoon-like texture. Also look for thicker concentrations of webbing, as spiders generally wrap their eggs thoroughly to protect them from harm. Trimming the number of potential hatchlings can oftentimes be enough to tip the balance of power back to you in your fight against unwanted house-guests.
