What does it mean for something to be decorative?

What does it mean for something to be decorative?  Is it stylish yet nonfunctional?  If the answer is yes then the piece of decor is decorative!  However, concerning folding screens these can be decorative, useful or both!  They can be designed to be both beautiful and functional and that is the goal for everything in my home.

Before you read any further take a moment and review your surroundings.  Just a brief moment.  Do you notice anything that could be designed better?  Maybe you see an idea for a new type of chair or even a better doorway.  Perhaps you are having trouble with the creativity aspect of seeing your surroundings as they could be instead of how they are.  If this is the case then you must find inspiration.  Read a magazine, search the web, and talk with friends.  Inspiration for creativity can be found all around you.  You just must be open to it.  All creativity comes from inspiration so be diverse as you search out your inspiration.  However, a better designed product is exactly what an iron folding screen is.  You just have to use it correctly to make it such an item.  It should be an ornamental work of art and placed in a position within your environment that allows it to actually become functional as well.  Use it to create privacy, block terrible views, and create escapes to other places in your home or garden.

Decorative folding screens are even useful within the garden, patio, and yard.  They serve well in keeping out the wondering eyes of neighbors and perhaps hiding dog pens.  Many can even be used as a trellis to hold vine growing plants such as the chocolate vine which produces a brownish purple leaf.  For exterior use keep in mind that iron and metal often do best outside.  As it is exposed to the weather and the metals begin to break down, the appearance of the privacy screen will actually improve.  Creating a rustic and authentic antique look that will make the decor look as though the plants themselves created the garden.

So yes, folding screens are decorative, but you must use them correctly for them to be functional also.  The best designs are both beautiful and useful.  So when decorating we should all keep in mind that thinking differently often requires being a little different.  Happy designing to you and your projects.  Thanks for reading!
