Worn on Mother’s Day (white color for mothers who have passed away and red color for moms who are still living), St. Patrick’s Day (in green, of course), Teacher’s Day and at weddings, this hardy, sweetly fragrant and beautiful flower is also the state flower of Ohio and the 1st wedding anniversary flower. White carnation is the traditional flower of the Belmont Stakes. Carnation was formerly used in Europe as a treatment for fevers. Many commercial varieties have flowers up to 3 inches in diameter and most flowers are double forms with ruffled petals.
