Different Types of Roses

The exquisite flower of rose symbolizing love and beauty, has enthralled millions for eons with its elegant appearance and enticing, gentle aroma. Rose flowers are perennial species, it means that they come back each year after a formancy period. You can find them on vines or shrubs and are typically very fragrant. The rose flower has different names in different languages, including gulab (hindi), warda (Arabic), roza (Bulgarian) and Golesorkh (Persian). There are more than one hundred species that can be found all across North America, Northwest Africa and Europe.

Fossil evidence tells that these flowers are more than 35 million years old and they were first cultivated around 5,000 years ago. Rose belongs to the scientific family Rosaceae of the Rosales order. The complete scientific classification of rose include kingdom Plantae, class Magnoliopsida, division Magnoliophyta, family Rosaceae, order Rosales, subfamily Rosoideae and genus Rosa.

Roses are broadly classified into three groups, they are species roses, old garden roses and modern roses:

Species roses (also known as wild species roses) are simple five-petal flowers which appear in early spring. They are hardy and can even thrive in the harshest conditions. Some popular types of species roses include the rubiginosa (rosa eglanteria), yellow lady bank rose (rosa banksiae lutea), Hudson’s bay rose (rosa blanda), Austrian copper (rosa foetida bicolor) and apple rose (rosa pomifera).

Old garden roses include disease resistant, winter-hardy and easy-to-grow rose varieties. These flowers vary in size and are preferred normally as ornamental plantings for their delicate beauty and wonderful perfume. They are typically white or pastel in color and include common varieties such as damask roses, bourbon roses, tea roses, moss roses and China roses.

Rose species identified after 1867 are called modern roses. They vary in size, color and foliage and include groundcover/ shrub varieties, climbers, upright flowers and miniature roses.
