Greenhouse Construction-Build A Cedar Greenhouse

This is the year to build a greenhouse for your many flower or vegetable garden plants. Your greenthumb is a proven success and your many plants need proper sheltered care. Let your woodworking skills build a DIY greenhouse.

This year the household has decided to build a large greenhouse. The plants have propagated and there is a need for more room. Perhaps your plants of herbs, specialty flowers, or tropical plants are healthy and thriving and also need more room. You and your family, like us, have truly discovered another thriving hobby.

You have been considering greenhouse construction for awhile and have now decided to build a cedar greenhouse.

If you think as we do, you probably like the natural benefits of cedar wood:

  1. It repels many insects, including termites.
  2. You also learned that cedar wood resists decay, fungus,  and it
  3. Creates its own preservative and insulation.
  4. The perfume of cedar is very pleasant.

Fear not, residential backyard greenhouses have become more attractive, yet functional. A beautifully built cedar greenhouse erected in the correct location of the yard can add to the beauty of the garden and the house; it need not be a blot on the landscape. Careful placement of the greenhouse will also add value to your property.

As you know, the most important element of any greenhouse is the heating system. The primary function of a greenhouse is to keep plants alive during cold months. Your residential state determines how often your heater will be used.

We raise orchids in Florida as a hobby. We do need to keep our plants at their correct temperature for survival, but not for months as in other regions of the country. It becomes your decision if you will need portable or permanent heating when considering your greenhouse construction plans.

Materials to build a cedar greenhouse include:

  1. Cedar lumber is needed for flooring, low side walls, and frames.
  2. Polycarbonate can be used for sidewalls and roof unless you prefer an acrylic product or other plastic materials.
  3. Cedar work benches and shelving need to be considered.
  4. Single or double doors need to be considered along with air vents.
  5. Plumbing needs for your workbench
  6. Will you use electricity, solar power, or both for the lighting and the greenhouse heating system?

Also, do not forget to place your greenhouse where it receives the benefit of the sunlight for the different types of plants you are growing. Also consider the distance from the garden in order to efficiently manage the carrying and the care of plants to and from the greenhouse. The greenhouse saves your plantsFree Web Content, your careful planning will save your footwork.
