How to choose a landscape designer for your home

What you need to know before choosing a landscape gardener or contractor for your home project, including what information you should receive from your initial consultation.

Landscape design companies, and landscaping in general, encompass many services. In your search for a landscape contractor, you will find that some companies specialise in specific areas (e.g. maintenance or paving) whereas others, perform a myriad of landscaping services.

A good place to begin your search is with referrals from friends and neighbours who have used a professional landscape contractor or designer. You may consider contacting a property owner you are not acquainted with, who has an obviously pleasing, professionally landscaped property, for a referral.

Before choosing a Landscaper ensure that they are licenced. You may be interested to know that a lot of 'so called landscapers' are not licensed or qualified to perform the work you require.

It is important to remember that landscaping, particularly landscape design and installation, is not a commodity for which a price tag can be easily attached. Purchasing landscape design and installation services might better compare to purchasing art. Landscapes that are pleasing to the eye, functional, and of lasting quality require professional design and installation drawing on many years of experience and dedication.

Before you do anything, we highly recommend an initial landscaping consultation with your prospective landscaper in a 1 or 2 our meeting that should include:

  • An assessment of what you need and what you really wantBusiness Management Articles, as well as your lifestyle requirements and/or dream
  • An assessment of how to get the most out of your existing lifestyle arrangement (home and garden).
  • An assessment of the budget for the project
