Lean-To Greenhouse- Small and Portable

Small, portable and practicle for starting new plants. Build a lean-to greenhouse, small and portable, is an excellent size to build if you are new to woodworking. A lean to being utilized as a greenhouse is the simplest of all shed structures.

Are you a beginner in greenhouse gardening?

It would be worth your while to start out with a small lean-to greenhouse which is also portable, but well suited for the purpose it serves. This is a great woodworking project for a beginner.

The purpose of the greenhouse is to:

• Keep seedlings and small plants away from insects
• Controlled humidity allowing a young plant or seed to establish itself in a healthy manner
• Allow a plant to propagate under ideal conditions
• Safeguard grafted plants
• Used as a hospital for sick plants which need to be separated and reestablished

At a later date your strong and healthy plants will be placed into a vegetable or a flower garden where they will continue to grow and thrive.

There are many varieties of lean-to greenhouse designs from simple to more complex construction. As a woodworking beginner keep your first project simple.

Greenhouse construction can be of wood, steel, aluminum, or plastic. The permanence of the main building, which can be your house, garage, barn, or other stable building will determine if the roof and sides will be covered with glass, polycarbonate, shade cloth, or polyethylene film.

Think about:

1. Do consider the aesthetic value of the lean-to greenhouse. If you want it against your house you would probably want it to look attractive with a design that fits the architectural design of your home.
2. The wall which receives most of the sun will be the location for the lean-to. Is this wall available? If the wall is dark in color this will help to hold the heat during the coolness of the day or evening.
3. Are you near the water supply and have a short walking access to the outdoor garden area? If there is no pathway to the outside garden this addition needs to be included in the cost of the lean-to construction budget.
4. Other supplies such as bags of fertilizer, compost and top soil are heavy; allow easy access from driveway to lean-to.
5. The lean-to does not house garden tools. Do you have a storage facility for your tools?
6. Construct the roofing of the lean-to greenhouse according to your area weather conditions.

One of the best advantages of a lean-to greenhouse is its portability.

It can be moved. Thank goodness! The sunlight moves with the season and most plants need six to twelve hours of light. Trees and other plants grow tall and will cast shade blocking light from young plants. Moving the lean-to greenhouse is easy as it is small and lightweight.
