Which Type of Pool Cover Is Right For You?

There are there major types of pool covers.  Which swimming pool cover should you purchase?

Most new swimming pool owners think that all they need for a pool cover is some thick plastic sheets, tarps or even some spare fabric.  Technically anything that you use to cover your swimming pool can be considered a "pool cover."  Basically, a swimming pool cover is anything that can be used to cover your swimming pool.

The cover will keep out trash debris and help prevent the accidental falling in of unsuspecting backyard visitors.  This does not mean, though, that all pool covers are the same.  There is a wide variety of pool covers that differ in terms of material, size, thickness, type, and intention.  Here are the three most popular types of covers for swimming pools that are available.

The net pool cover is just what it sounds like: a safety net-like apparatus that covers your pool.  This particular swimming pool cover is not meant to keep out trash or other types of debris.  The main purpose of this particular cover for your swimming pool is to provide a barrier between the water in your swimming pool and small children who might wander too close to the edge of the pool and accidentally fall in.

The net pool cover is made up of fibers that form a net that, while not dense enough to hold a fully grown person's weight, will temporarily hold the weight of smaller children.  The openings of the net are small enough that children will not be able to fit their heads or most body parts through.  Obviously the net pool cover is not meant to be walked or jumped on.  The major advantage of this type of cover for your pool is that, in addition to providing a safety barrier for youngsters who might not be able to swim, it is easy to store out of the way.

The mesh pool cover is another type of very popular swimming pool cover in that it woven openly enough that water can pass through it but tightly enough that trash and debris are blocked from being able to sink into the swimming pool and "gunk it up."  Mesh pool covers help pool owners save money on cleaning costs and time on keeping their pools debris free.  The mesh allows the water to move freely while keeping detrimental materials out of the pool.

The vinyl pool covers are among the most expensive types of pool covers on the current market.  Swimming pool owners use vinyl pool covers because they can save money on cleaning and heating.  The cover usually runs on tracks that sit a few inches above the water and provide a solid barrier between external influences and the pool itself.  The vinyl is thick plastic and is not solid enough to hold a person's weight but it is solid enough to keep everything out of your swimming pool's water.

These are the three most popular types of pool covers.  Remember, a pool cover might seem like an unneeded expense nowScience Articles, but you'll be wishing you had one when you have to pay someone to unclog your pool's pipes!
