Acid reflux becomes a problem when there is a malfunction with the LES or Lower Esophageal Sphincter. This is a ring of muscles that work much like a valve at the front of the stomach. If the valve is malfunctioning, by either opening more than normal or not sealing when it closes, the stomach acid is allowed to escape into the esophagus, which is not where the it belongs and is what causes the burning sensation that is always present with acid reflux.

Let us consider a Hiatal Hernia and how it will have the same effects on people. This hernia primarily restricts the LES and the top part of the stomach from returning to their normal positions, thus allowing acid to leak out from the stomach and creating problems in the individual. Keep reading because these are just a couple of reasons for acid reflux.

There are things that people do and eat that can cause acid reflux and these are easy to control. One of the most basic is avoid stuffing yourself, and then you definitely don't want to lay down after doing so. That will make a big difference on Thanksgiving holiday for sure! Smaller meals at more frequent intervals will help with acid reflux and with keeping hunger down in general. Carrying extra weight will lend it self to suffering from this disease. Avoiding foods that are triggers is smart too. This varies from person to person but there is a list of typical problem foods such as alcohol, caffeine, and acid foods.

If you are trying to figure out if you might have acid reflux there are a few things to look for. The most common is naturally heartburn that can be in your throat, chest or stomach area. Sometimes there will be slight regurgitation as acid backs up the throat. This is very uncomfortable and tastes a nasty sour. Many will become bloated, have issues with continuous burping, and a feeling that something is blocking the throat.
