If you go to any high school or middle school,An Orthodontist is Still Needed After Your Braces Are Off Articles you will most likely see a good bit of students who wear braces on their teeth. At one time, this was something to be ashamed of. People would even get teased for wearing them. However, nowadays it's not as much of a big deal. Although each person who wears braces is wearing them for different reasons, there is one thing that brings them together. That is the need for an orthodontist. It's clear to see that the orthodontist is needed to actually put the braces on. However, these professionals are just as, if not more important, once they are taken off. This may not sound true, but it is. First of all, contrary to what some may think, just because someone gets this particular type of dental treatment, doesn't mean that it permanently corrects their issue. That is because when a tooth grows a certain way and it is suddenly shifted, it tends to try to go back to its original state. So, take someone who has a few spaces between their teeth, for example. They could keep their braces on for two or even three years. Once they finally get them off after about a year or so, they may notice that their teeth have began to shift. This doesn't mean that the orthodontist didn't do a good job. However, this is just the way it is. That's why it's important to conduct follow-ups so that they can monitor the progression and figure out what changes need to be made. This is another reason that they create retainers. They help to keep the teeth from moving. However, sometimes even retainers aren't enough. If someone doesn't realize this, however, they could find themselves back in the same predicament they were in before they got their braces. That's why it's so important to keep in touch with the dental specialist. During check-ups they will be able to see whether or not the teeth are staying in place. If not, they will be able to stop the issue before it gets worse. Going too long without visiting the office, could mean that a person may have to get braces all over again. Not only can this be disheartening as well as annoying, but if can also be costly. Sometimes this procedure can cost between $2,000 to $5,000 or more. So, having to pay for it all over again is something not too many people are able to afford. If you have recently gotten your braces removed, don't neglect going back to your orthodontist for periodic check-ups. Although you may not experience any major issues, it's better to be safe than sorry.
