surgical instruments are handled in three different phases. Pre-operative, intraoperative and post-operative task. Refering to these three phases is what's known as the instrument cycle.

Preoperatively the surgical instrument sets and other medical are planed by the surgeon for his own choosing. The medical instrument container must be opened and the surgical instrument sets removed from the container. Surgical instruments and other medical supplies are gathered and prepared for use on the back table and mayo stand.

Critical thinking comes along with using intraoperative surgical instruments involves a complex set of complex task. The STSR must be ready and aware of the needs of what the patient needs and the medical team as well. In order for you to be best at this, you'll need to have a full understanding of the patent and the surgical practice of this. It is crucial that the STSR observe the progress of the procedure to obtain necessary information. The surgeon may request demands verbally or by hand signals. The surgeon may call out the name of the desired instruments… scalpel, hemostatic clamp, surgical scissors, tissue forceps, free tie, etc.

Hand signals work best because it keeps talking to a minimum. This is why if the patient is not under general anesthesia he may feel awkward, its better just to keep them in the dark until the operation is over. Postoperative surgical instruments means handling all the steps of preparing the surgical instruments for use of surgery. These steps may include decontamination, Inspection and maintenance, reassembly of the set, preparation for sterilization, sterilization and storage.
