Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery for young women, accounting for 350,000 procedures each year in the United States.  Women most interested in this procedure range from 18 to 50 plus years of age. Breast augmentation is usually sought after by women because of small breasts, displeasing anatomical features, and breast sagginess. Breast Augmentation Methodology

The first breast augmentation procedures were performed through fat (adipose) transfer from other areas of the body.  This method was problematic because it often resulted in calcification and hardening of the breasts, resulting in an unnatural look. Breast Augmentation Incision Choices

Breast augmentation incision sites commonly applied during the procedure, include: peri-areolar (lower edge of the areola). Inframammary (lower edge of the breast), axillary (through the arm pits) and umbilical incision (through the belly button) are less frequent.        

Implant Size and Shape

In Dr. Blau’s practice, the most commonly used breast implants are 300-450 cc in size.  The most popular shape is round (as opposed to oval (tear drops).  Implants profile (height) and dimensions are also importance to the final results and are determined based on the patient’s body shape.   High profile implants are generally good for women with a smaller, thinner chest (32-34); medium profile is usually adequate for women with bra sizes of 36 and up. The implant’s surface may be smooth or textured. Dr. Blau’s preference is a smooth surfaced implant.
