Breast Implants: Corrective and Cosmetic Uses

Plastic surgery of all types is gaining popularity on countries around the world. Although the most popular surgery varies per country, one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries around the world is breast augmentation. The operation changes the size and shape of the breasts to be larger. Breast implants are implanted beneath the skin (sometimes underneath the muscles of the chest as well) to increase the perceived size. There are a few corrective, rather than cosmetic, purposes for breast implants. The most common is when they are used for women who have had a mastectomy. Cancer survivors often have breast implants if they've had one or both breasts removed, so that they can look and feel like themselves again. As incidences of breast cancer increase, surgeons become more skilled at using implants to match the woman's existing breast size and shape. Often, they can be put in at the same time the natural breast tissue is removed, so the woman only needs to undergo a single surgery. In some cases, a woman may have largely uneven breasts due to genetics. Although most natural breasts vary in size and shape slightly, some women have markedly different sized ones, varying several cup sizes. In these cases, breast implants may help the woman achieve a more even look and to become more confident in the size of her breasts. Finally, breast implants may be used to help women with gender identity disorder. Women with gender identity disorder feel as though they were born the wrong gender. These transwomen, biologically born as men, may seek various methods to change their bodies to reflect what they feel is their inherent gender. Many seek cosmetic surgery to give their bodies a more feminine shape. However, despite these corrective uses, most breast implants are given for purely cosmetic reasons. Some women feel incredibly insecure about their bodies. In a quest to achieve validation through Men's desiring of them, they become caricatures of what they believe men find attractive. Frequently, this includes getting large breast implants. Frequently, women choosing breast implants to attract men and increase their self-esteem choose breasts that would are comically large for their body size. Women come in all shapes and sizes, naturally, but it's extremely rare for a petite woman to naturally have an extremely large bust. Going against nature doesn't stop women interested in breast augmentation, however. They frequently choose the largest possible size that can be safely implanted, resulting in extraordinarily, unnaturally large breasts.
