Caring for your Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are added to your natural hair to add volume and length. If done well (by a qualified professional) this cosmetic enhancement is not noticeable and looks completely natural. It is very important that you care for them as though you had grown the locks yourself.

Shampooing is very important. Shampoo is specially formulated to remove dirt, oil, styling products and environmental contaminants. Neglecting this step will quickly lead to unsightly locks. While everyone's scalp is different, it is usually best to shampoo regularly. For some this means every day, for others this means every other day. Check with your stylist to see what he or she recommends. Also, be sure to choose a shampoo that is safe for your new hairdo!

Conditioner is also a very important product to keep your new locks looking great. Since they are not attached to your scalp, they do not receive the natural oils that your body produces. It is highly likely that your stylist recommends a specific product that will keep your style looking fabulous for the entire time the hair extensions are in place.
Brushing and styling your hair extensions really is not any different than the way you are used to doing things. You may be offered a special brush or you might be encouraged to buy a certain type of brush. To keep tangles at bay, put your locks in a braid or pony tail before bed. This will make styling it much easier the next day.

You want to be careful when using a hair dryer. The heat can dry out your new do and make it more susceptible to breakage and other damage. Also, you do not want the dryer to get too close to your scalp and the connections that have been added. With proper caution you should be just fine, just be mindful when using this styling tool. Other styling tools and products can be used just like always. Keep in mind that if synthetics were used (i.e. not "real" strands) then you are going to have to avoid curling and straightening irons unless your stylist tells you otherwise. Some synthetics do not respond well to heat styling which results in singeing and ruined styles.

If you want to cut, color, or perm your new locks, make sure you visit the same stylist that put the hair extensions in place. He or she will have the best knowledge of how to change the style and color without causing damage. Some processes may be recommended over others, and consulting with your stylist will eliminate any guesswork from the process.
