The mouth we have we are unfortunately going to have to keep until we die. As children we get one do over where all of our baby teeth all out and we have hopefully learned or been taught good enough habits to keep the next set last for the rest of our lives.

The fact is we don't learn our lesson. We do horrible things to and with our mouths that dental professionals are strongly opposed to and would like to spread the word to stop. Some of these are intuitive or old hat for those of us in the know about how to treat our oral health but some of them may come as a shock. Regardless of whether you have been told these facts your whole life or whether you had no idea before today here is a list of things your dentist does not want you to do.

Don't use your teeth fro anything but eating. That means no opening soda bottles or tearing open cookie wrappers. They are not designed for that and as such do not do a very good job. Also the potential for damage is extraordinary. Chipping cracking and fracturing are all common maladies associated with trying to make your pearly whites into kitchen utensils. Buy a bottle opener and a pair of scissors and stop risking a visit to the emergency dentist.

Don't whiten your teeth excessively or use overly abrasive toothpastes. These are both damaging to the enamel and once that stuff is gone it is gone for good. With some over the counter whiteners pores in the enamel can develop leading to easier incursion of bacteria and damage. Harsh abrasives can wear the protective layer away and lead to the same sort of problems. If you think that you need your pearly whites to be more white call a dentist and have them professionally treat you so that you get the safest and in all likelihood more successful procedure.

Do not get a tongue piercing or lip piercing or other oral cavity accoutrement no matter how good you think it looks. For one thing you are never going to be eighty and want to have a whole in your tongue. Also,Dentist Says Dont Do these Things Articles it is super easy to scratch chip or crack a tooth when there is a permanent piece of metal nearby. These things are the bane of many a dentist.

Don't go to bed without brushing and flossing. No other suggested oral care tip is more important than brushing before going to bed. Leaving food or drink on the teeth through the night is a surefire way to cause damage and decay. As they decompose in the mouth hey cause a growth of bacteria that eats away at the protective layer all night. Many people will brush and then eat a late night snack or drink a glass of milk. If this is you be sure to at least rinse with water or get the food off with another quick brushing.
