1) Brush twice a day. Good oral hygiene habits should begin in childhood. A minimum of brushing in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed should be adhered to. Some people chose to bring a portable toothbrush with them wherever they go so that they can brush after every meal or snack. The longer food stays on enamel, the higher the likelihood of decay occurring.

2) Flossing should be a regular part of routine. Some individuals think that flossing with dental floss only needs to be performed after eating corn-on-the-cob or BBQ ribs. Flossing eliminates plaque and debris that can’t be seen or felt and should be performed regularly. In between molars may be difficult to reach but there are plastic extension tools available at the local drug store to help reach the faraway spaces. Children should be encouraged to floss as well, in order to cement this habit into their lifestyle.

3) See the dentist every six months for regular checkups. Going in for checkups and cleanings every six months is an important part of preventative maintenance. Not only will the choppers be kept in pristine condition, but any problem that may be lurking can be nipped in the bud before it grows into an extremely difficult condition.

4) Have procedures performed when necessary. It’s no secret that many individuals dislike having dental work performed. They may feel that simply ignoring a tiny cavity or toothache will make it magically go away. Wrong! Ignoring a small cavity will allow it to become larger. A mild toothache is a red flag of trouble brewing. Fixing the problem will allow individuals to keep their teeth through their lifetime. Many people ignore their dental health thinking it is no big deal when in reality it is a huge deal. Keeping one’s teeth is important enough but untreated dental maladies can lead to heart disease, clogged arteries, premature birth, chronic infections, diabetes complications and more.

5) Buy a new toothbrush every couple of months. Think it’s frivolous to purchase a brand new toothbrush when the old trusty one still has its bristles? Think again! Even though the bristles may still be attached to the toothbrush, they wear out over time. Not only that but they begin to harbor bacteria and germs. It’s a couple of bucks well spent to toss the old one and buy a brand spanking new one at the local drugstore. Many dentists give their patients a new one as a souvenir of their regular checkup.
