How to be motivated when you try to quit smoking again.

Every smoker needs help to stop smoking. Self help : let’s call that Motivation !

Smokers who have tried to quit and gave up often tell me they just can’t get motivated again. Sometimes we need to be shocked to get motivated, such as learning someone close just got a cancer. Sometimes after a few minutes of walk you are out of breath and can't seem to get your heart rate and breath at their regular rythm. Repeated bouts of bronchitis or allergies get us thinking long and hard. Even so, if breaking the habit of smoking is not something we truly want to commit ourself, can we really success ?

Would you like to do an exercise ? Take a sheet of paper and a pen, or open a word processing document window. Minimize -don't close !) this current window and do this. It's not a hard exercise, however a very recommended one if you want a plan to stop smoking.

There are some positive and negative reasons why you want to quit. What are those motivators behind your choice to stop smoking?

Start with the negative motivators, the motivators that bother you, such as “People remark that I smell of smoke”. Perhaps they blame you for smoking, or you’re embarrassed to have to leave the building and be singled out as a smoker. Perhaps you are embarrassed or uncomfortable at always being out of breath. Maybe you can relate to these reasons, list them all.

When you're done with the negative motivators, write your positive motivators. Picture in your mind what your life as a non smoker is like. Perhaps you want your spouse or children to be proud of you. Perhaps you want your kids to follow their parent's example. You want to have more energy and get healthy. Take few minutes to list your positive motivators. Take your list of fears you made and keep it with this new one.
