Constipation is a problem that millions of people deal with. For some of us, it is something that we have very little control over whether it be due to illness or medication. But for the majority of us a healthy diet and a few lifestyle changes can have a huge positive impact on our digestive system. In this article I will discuss some of the main causes of constipation and what we can do to beat it!

Our digestive system plays a significant role in the quality of entire physiological body system. It is in charge of providing our body with the nutrients and vitamins it needs by breaking down the foods we eat. It also helps support our immune system by producing antibodies that are created during the digestive process. It is very important that we support our digestive system the best way possible, by eating a healthly diet and living an active lifestyle. Failure to do so can lead to many unwanted illnesses with one of these illnesses being constipation.

Constipation occurs when an individual experiences very few bowel movements and are unable to empty their bowels completely. Signs of constipation include very dry, small and hard feces during a bowel movement, pain or discomfort during a bowel movement or just not having the urge to have a bowel movement as frequent as you should.  If you experience these sympoms for a period of days, weeks, or months then it could be very well be a severe or chronic case and you should consider seeking medical attention.

What Are The Causes Of Constipation?

A poor diet is normally the main culprit that causes constipation. Most people eat foods that contain a low fiber content; thus, giving them very poor diet. The following items are known to contribute to severe constipation.

  • Dairy products
  • Foods loaded fat and sugar
  • Lack of high-fiber food intake (such as vegetables and fruits)
  • Lack of water intake
  • Too much alcohol or coffee intake
  • Health Conditions. As people get older, they tend to acquire illnesses that also result in having serious constipation. Some of these health conditions include diabetes, hypothyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and lupus.
  • The metabolism rate of individuals naturally slow down right after they reach the age of late 20’s or 30’s and beyond. This is the reason why most people, especially women, have very different body size when they were teenagers and when they become adults.
  • Physical Inactivity. This is also one of the most common causes of severe constipation. A sedentary lifestyle can be detrimental to you health. It is important that you are getting some sort of physical activity in a few times during the week.

How To Relieve Severe Constipation Naturally

I'm not a fan of taking a boatload of medications without doing what every I can do possible to naturally alleviate the problem. The same goes for constipation. Here are some tips to give your digestive system the boost it needs and to get those "number 2's" back on track!

  • Eat more fiber.
  • Vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, carrots, cauliflower, artichokes, green beans, collard, mustard, and Swiss chard
  • Berries and other fruits such as grapes and apples
  • Seeds such as pumpkin, sesame, flax seeds, and sunflower
  • Nuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts
  • Prunes
  • Drink more water. Adding more water into your body makes the hard, dry stools easily come out from within. The most acceptable number of glasses of water to take daily is at least eight. Water will help your body to remove waste as well as the added benefit of , and it can also make their skin look younger and glowing.
  • Take a probiotic. Consume those microorganisms! Probiotics are good bacteria that help support the digestive system. They are already found inside the human body, but they can also be found in food. Probiotics help in treating health conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and infectious diarrhea. Examples of products with probiotic ingredients are yogurt, miso soup, soy milk, microalgae, pickles, kimchi, and olives.
  • Try a colon Cleanse. A lot of people have opted for colon cleansing, but this should not be the reason why others should take it as well. A natural colon cleanse solution could work wonders for people experience bowel irregularity and constipation.

If I could only give one small piece of advice to help with constipation it would be to eat a healthy diet and get active! Whether its a brisk walk in the morning or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, every little bit helps.
