Insights into Studies of Sleep Disorders

There have been thousand of sleep disorder studies done throughout the world.  There are a lot of sufferers of sleep disorder so this is an area that is ripe for study by researchers interested in knowing the causes and treatments of these conditions.  The various studies are designed to help you sleep better and sleep more soundly.  Sleep disorder studies attempt to uncover the possible causes and treatments for insomnia or other sleep disorders.  It’s important to remember that many disorders of sleep are as a result of a psychological mechanism.

Sleep Disorders Types

There are some conditions in which you get enough sleep but things happen during sleep. An example is bruxism, in which you grind your teeth in your sleep.  Up to 20 million individuals suffer from it during the night.  Another sleep disorder is delayed sleep phase syndrome.  In such a condition you cannot get to sleep at night and you have problems waking up in the morning.  You can usually not get to sleep until after midnight and you have problems waking up during the morning hours.  You usually get enough sleep unless you force yourself to get up in the morning.

Another sleep disorder is called hypopnea syndrome.  This involves falling asleep okay but having shallow breathing and poor oxygenation during sleep.  It is usually uncovered during a sleep study and can be dangerous to your health.  

Other sleep disorders studied at sleep disorder clinics include narcolepsy in which you fall asleep involuntarily and quite suddenly.  You sleep poorly at night, too.  There is also restless leg syndrome where your legs jump and are tingly at night so you cannot get a good night’s sleep.  Periodic limb movement during sleep is a related condition that happens when you sleep.

A condition called REM behavior disorder involves random twitching while dreaming. It can become quite violent so that you are practically acting out your dreams and can injure yourself or your sleeping partner.  Related conditions include sleep apnea, snoring difficulties, and sleep walking.

Many times the doctor might prescribe sleeping medication for sleep problems. These are just temporary measures and do not address the underlying issues.  Sleep disorder clinics have discovered that psychotherapeutic tools that are more effective than pills.  They address the root of the issue and make taking medications less helpful or necessary.
