This question is one that has been debated across the board and it is one that really has no answer very simply because both seem to be factors in obesity and so it is difficult to decide which one is really top dog. When you look at the big picture there is no easy answer to the question because both of these issues do factor in and while many will try and take a side as to which one is the primary cause and which one is secondary there are good arguments on both sides of the debate.

You can't ignore the basic fact that the things that you eat and how much of them that you consume is a big factor in what you will weigh. There are tons of choices at the grocery store that will do just awful things to your body. There are also the choices there that are great for your health. What you pick will actually poison you slowly or it will make you much healthier. Different people need to eat different types of food to lose weight. It is common for many people to be able to lose pounds while avoiding carbs. It is not just important what you eat but is also crucial how you eat. The foods that you eat growing up and how they are eaten is a large part of how your environment factors into your weight. If your family is overweight as a rule and you grow up with poor eating habits that you learn from them, that is not certainly heredity. It can be simply because of the environment.

In a household with four children all of whom have the same heredity and the same environmental exposure to the same foods and the same parents perhaps only two will be obese and the others may be of normal weight which tends to throw the entire thought process off kilter, indicating that there is more to obesity then eating habits, environment, or even heredity.

One thing that needs to be addressed and accepted is that everyone really is different when it comes to food needs. The food that will help one to become more healthy is different from what someone else will need. While it might seem that some people can eat whatever they want and never gain a pound while others just gain weight like mad. The actual habits need to be looked at more closely. One extra snack a day for one and a little more activity for another adds up to a big difference.
