1. Wash your kitchen sponges.  Wash your dirty sponges in the dishwasher or microwave them for a full minute to help keep them germ-free (I’ve never heard this and find it to be easy and pure genius).

2. Organize your fridge.  Keep your meat and seafood away from your cheese and veggies.  It is important to always double wrap meats that are marinating in your fridge as well, to prevent sticky cleanup and also keep you germ-free.

3. Buy wooden cutting boards and wash thoroughly with soap and warm water.  Air-drying the cutting boards is best, as wooden cutting boards are breathable and less hospitable to germs than plastic ones.  If you already have plastic ones and aren’t willing to buy more, machine-wash them whenever possible.

4. Use distilled white vinegar to break up dirt and clean surfaces (rather than apple cider or red wine vinegars which could stain).  This is especially useful on stainless steel sinks and ceramic stove tops.

5. Wipe down your countertops and sinks every day.  If you use a paper towel to do so, be sure to throw it away immediately.  Do not leave the paper towel on a counter as it will spread germs very quickly.

6. Throw away all used tissues.  Don’t leave them on your bed or nightstand, even if you’re already sick.  It’s like a hotbed for the spreading of germs.

7. Clean the surfaces you touch every day with Lysol or a green cleaning product that will disinfect.  This includes all doorknobs, toilet and sink handles, cell phone, computer keyboard, video game controllers, fridge handles and stair banisters.  These places we seldom think to clean and thus, can be the dirtiest.  I also try to Lysol the sides of my kitchen trashcan and the walls that it touches.

8. And, of course, wash your hands.
