Why Special Undergarments?
There are several different reasons for wearing shape wear, or compression garments underneath your clothing in the time after surgery. There are two main reasons for why these pieces are so important to your recovery. The first task of these girdle-like garments is to reduce bleeding. With some liposuction techniques bleeding can take place immediately after the operation. The pressure from the clothing reduces the amount of bleeding with is always better for the patient.

As with many other types of surgery, there is also some swelling that takes place. The compression garments serve to reduce the amount of swelling for an extended amount of time over the course of recovery. The amount of time they need to work depends on the type of surgery, the method used and even the specific person's body. Again, it is in the patient's best interest to keep the swelling down to speed up the time it takes the body to heal.

Do I Have to Wear the Provided Garment?
If your physician had an example of a compression garment to show you, chances were that you turned your nose up to it. It was probably a nude or white color, looked like something that an elderly grandmother would wear, and something that you wouldn't be caught dead wearing. You want liposuction and you want to look better, but you dread putting something like that on while you are in the process of recovering.

The truth is that as long as you find the right size piece that does the same job, you don't have to stick with the basic compression garment. Before surgery, head to a department store and check out some of the other available options. You may be able to find something in black, a print, or even leopard print, depending on your personal tastes and preferences. Be sure that this piece covers the same area and provides that same amount of pressure and you should be fine.

If you have concerns or if you aren't sure if something will work, you can purchase it, save the receipts, and take it with you to the next doctor's appointment to prepare for the liposuction. The doctor will be able to take a look and determine if this is something that will serve the same purpose. Remember that just because you are getting ready to go through a major operation, there is no need for you to be uncomfortable in your recovery clothing!
