While lots of people think of their hair as a fashion statement the hair and scalp actually offers up a lot of information regarding the health of an individual as well and using this information might just help to clue you in on a more serious issue that might be occurring within your own body. Thinning hair is among the most common problems reported by people as they age. While it could just mean that after years of abuse your hair is finally showing some signs of over processing, coloring, and over drying, it could also be a sign of something more serious, a thyroid problem. Those with thinning hair should see their doctor and ask to have a thyroid test done. Other signs and symptoms of a thyroid problem are fatigue, weight gain, slow heart rate, and loss of the outer third of the eyebrows.
Some men and women find that they have a crusty build up on their scalp or they find some scales on the hairline. Either of these could be an early sign of psoriasis.

Psoriasis affects just under 8 million Americans and can occur along with other autoimmune diseases such as Chron's disease, etc. There are many ways someone can address psoriasis. Some individuals find that early on in the disorder it is easy to treat with some of the over the counter remedies on the market. Other find that they achieve the best possible results by getting treatment for their psoriasis through a dermatologist. For the most part this disease is manageable but if you notice scales and crust on your skin or scalp it is a great idea to sit down with your doctor and receive a full diagnosis and treatment options.

Hair loss in small circular patterns can also be indicative of a health problem. This type of hair loss is caused when the follicle simply let go of hair at the shaft this problem is also known as allopecia areata. It can occur anywhere on the scalp including the hair line, part line, and even at the temples. Diabetes is the most common cause for this type of hair loss and it can continue to spread if not addressed. In many cases this condition will not only affect the hair on the person's head but also affects the eyebrows and eyelashes as well.

Any abnormal hair or scalp condition can be an indication of something a lot more serious. So be sure to pay attention to any changes and to contact your physician if you observe any issues with hair loss or scalp dryness or irritation. These can not only be addressed but they can also lead to an earlier diagnosis of a more serious health condition.
