Orthopedic surgeons spend years learning to treat patients. Although they spend over a decade preparing to be surgeons, the career is rewarding.

When other treatment programs are ineffective, orthopedic surgeons may be necessary to reduce pain and assist with mobility. These doctors diagnose and treat problems related to patients' joints, bones, and tendons. They can treat patients with surgery or with rehabilitation, medication, or other solutions that do not require surgery. The doctors may use treatments that are both invasive and non-invasive, opting for non-invasive procedures when possible. 
These doctors spend almost a decade training to treat patients. They make decisions that can impact a person's ability to function in society. In addition to completing college, the doctors also complete medical school and a residency program.
There are typically few spots available in residency programs and the candidates who are able to enter must have impressive grades in medical school. The doctors are then candidates to become certified by the various associations in the field.
The organization that certifies these doctors is called the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Upon passing examinations in both written and oral formats, the doctor can become certified. He or she must have also have practiced in the field for at least two years and have completed a residency to become an orthopedic surgeon. Most doctors specialize in specific fields, focusing on specific parts of the body. For example, your doctor may be an expert in treating knees and another doctor may have an expertise in performing surgery on athletic injuries. Orthopedic surgeons are likely to receive additional study in specialized fields and will learn additional strategies for treating patients. If your doctor is labeled as an expert in a particular field, he or she has likely performed a large number of cases in the treatment area. The doctor may have also received top honors for his or her work.
Doctors also participate in various classes and training seminars to keep up-to-date on procedures and treatments for their patients. Doctors who have obtained certification must document that they have taken certain courses to maintain that certification. Doctors in this field must have great hand-eye coordination, and they must be able to communicate effectively both with patients and with other doctors. The doctor must also be able to troubleshoot effectively and must be an excellent team player.Because orthopedic surgeons dedicate a large amount of time to their training, they are usually concerned with their patients' well-being. Working as a physician in this field can be highly satisfying for people who want to make a difference in patients' lives and see real results. These doctors have the satisfaction of seeing patients who have trouble walking or running perform these functions again. Patients who have reduced mobility may be again to regain some mobility after consulting with a doctor. 
The doctor can sometimes perform treatments that reduce or eliminate pain experienced by their patients. Sometimes general practitioners will refer patients to these physicians so that they may receive the specialized care needed to help them thrive once more. Although the pursuit of a license to practice that all orthopedic surgeons must obtain may appear to be an insurmountable task in the beginning, the career is also rewarding.
