Plastic Surgery Dangers and Risks

Plastic surgery is one of the most common procedures that done everyday. Despite the constant reminders that an operation carries a certain amount of risk and danger, many individuals are willing to undertake some form of cosmetic operation just to improve their appearance or restore form and function to something which may have been damaged or destroyed. While there is nothing wrong in wanting to appear better or to want to regain something which has been damaged, the risks that come with medical or cosmetic procedures should be weighed well.

The Human Factor

The doctor who will do the operation is one of the factors that can tip the scale from safe to dangerous. What we can read on the paper and research in the internet are well and good but these are basically written by people who may have been influenced to write good reviews of certain doctors or hospitals. Some doctors are also not qualified, certified or licensed to operate on people in this aspect of medicine. The human margin for error is basically high and this can happen at any time and at any place. There are ways to reduce the risk of human error but it is not a hundred percent certain at all times.

Other than the surgeon, the nurses and staff members who will be helping the doctor are also included in the factors that can negatively affect plastic surgery. Even the patient can also influence the outcome of the procedure in such as way that it can become risky for him. This can happen during the operation as well as during the recovery period.

Complications

Complications which are dangerous usually occur during the undertaking of the surgery. Bleeding is one such risk that doctors are often prepared for while a negative reaction to medication can also be anticipated and treated easily. Anesthesia can cause some adverse reactions in the body such as nausea and sore throat. Allergic reactions to anesthesia may also occur but the more serious reactions such as elevated heart rate or elevated blood pressure can also be risky. The body’s reaction to the stress and anxiety of the operation can also prove to be a negative factor. Some individuals are so anxious that they have difficulty breathing or have panic attacks to such an extent that the procedure may be cancelled or moved to a later date.

Other kinds of complications can also occur after the procedure has ended. Bleeding can still occur afterwards especially when the patient exerts himself too much and opens the sutures or incisions which have been closed by the surgeon. Necrosis is the death of tissues involved in the operation due to the lack of blood. This can happen when the surgeon makes a mistake and cuts of the blood supply to certain areas of the body. This is basically a rare occurrence especially for plastic surgery but it can happen no matter how rare it is. Some risks and complications may be caused by aggravating the incisions or the wounds that were made during the operation.
