Preparing to Visit the Dentist
A general dentist is someone that you will visit regularly for check-ups and maintenance. For these reasons you want to select a dental practitioner who is suitable for you and your oral health needs. The dentist’s chair is something that we all need to sit in at least twice a year in order to keep our teeth and our gums as healthy as possible and in tip top shape.
Book your appointment on a day and at a time when you will be feeling calmer and will not be rushed. For some people that might be a morning appointment while for others an afternoon or evening appointment might be best. For some patients an appointment before the start of the work day might be most suitable while for others going right after work but before supper might be best.
If you can find someone who is available to go with you to your scheduled appointment then that can alleviate some of your nervousness because you will have someone to talk to and other topics of conversation to focus on. Taking your most upbeat and optimistic family member or friend with you is your best bet as they can help you to feel more comfortable and can keep you smiling and laughing in the waiting room before it is your turn to see the healthcare provider.
Being in the proper frame of mind is so important. It is also important to be as calm and as serene as you can possibly be when you walk through your dentist’s door and sit down in his chair. This is easier said than done. However whatever helps you to feel relaxed is what you should do.
Take a relaxing bath and add an essential oil such as lavender to help soothe your senses. Go for a walk or take a drive before your appointment. Have a massage, meditate or practice yoga before you have to show up at the office. All of these things can make it possible for you to not be as scared at the prospect of having your teeth and gums examined by the dental practitioner.
Make sure that you choose a dental provider that you feel comfortable in the presence of and one that you trust. Dental procedures are not enjoyable which is why you want to go to a dentist who makes you feel at ease. You also want to go to a practitioner who addresses all of your concerns as quickly as possible.
It helps to always practice good dental hygiene at home. In this way you will know that you are doing your part and that should help to alleviate some of your concern when you show up at the dentist’s office. This means brushing your teeth every time you eat (or at least twice a day) and flossing your teeth on a daily basis.
