Under this rule,Restaurants across America To Display Calorie Counts Articles restaurant chains across America will be required to highlight the calorie count of different food items on their respective menus. The move is being seen as a step to deal with the problem of obesity that plagues a large number of Americans.

Restaurants in New York City and Seattle are already following this practice and the new rule will now ensure that restaurant chains across the country do the same. The rule is applicable to all restaurants, movie theatres and amusement parks, which have a minimum of 20 outlets in the country. Large grocery store chains which sell prepared food are also included, given that they have 20 locations.

This means that starting from January, the amount of calories that a hot dog from a convenience store has, to the calorie count of popcorns at movie theatres will be displayed for the public. The rules also apply to vending machines. This means that vending machine operators will also need to publicize the calories in their beverages if they are placed in 20 or more locations.

The FDA commissioner, Margaret Hamburg confirmed that the step is being taken to deal with the problem of obesity and stated that it is in the best interest of public health. According to Dr. Hamburg, the aim of this plan is to aid the general public in making informed eating choices.

The rule was first proposed in 2011 by the FDA and received resistance and criticism from many businesses on whom it was going to be applicable. Grocery store chains and movie theatres had cited that it would be very costly and impractical for them to comply with the rule. However, now that the rule is being implemented, it does not exclude them.

After the recent announcement by FDA, grocery stores were quick to criticize the move. They claimed that it was not possible to check the calorie content of all prepared food items sold in the store and place special labels on them. This is because the food items in this category are changed very frequently.

According to the Food Marketing Institute, the estimated cost associated with complying with the new requirement for grocery stores would be over a billion dollars in the first year alone. The institute represents grocery stores in America. According to the institute, this would raise the costs significantly and cut down the profit margin of grocery stores.
