Sedation Dentistry To Eliminate Anxiety
For many people there is a large amount of fear and concern surrounding every dentist appointment. This need not be the case however. There are a number of solutions and techniques available to allow ...
The major problem, besides patient discomfort, that is associated with this sort of problem is the fact that fear leads many to eschew their regularly scheduled preventative care out of a desire to avoid negative experiences. Fortunately, if this sounds like something that a person is grappling with they simply need to talk with their dentist about options they may have.
Usually sedation dentistry mainly refers to the use of sedatives, tranquilizers, nitrous oxide, or anti-anxiety medication. Whereas in the past these needed to be administered intravenously, and thus exacerbated the fear of needles, advancements have allowed patients a new method for deliverance of relaxing medications. Instead, one now has the option of oral administration that requires simply taking a pill and waiting for the positive effects.
In addition to medication, many sedation dentistry professionals are using relaxing techniques leading up to actual procedure. This involves calming the patient down and allowing them to spend time in an environment that is conducive to putting them at ease. Additionally, because of the risk of contraindication, a dentist will need to do extensive preliminary interviews to determine general health and other medications.
Because of the sedative effect of these drugs it is not possible to drive oneself to and from you appointment. Instead it is necessary to find a friend or loved one to bring the patient and pick them up. This is because these drugs are fairly powerful and can have lasting effects well after the procedure is done. This allows a person to be back in the comfort of their own home before having to fully face the tension that their dental visit may have caused.
Sedation dentistry is an excellent choice for those who have significant anxiety surrounding their oral health care. It is not without its risks and considerations however. It is not well suited to every person but for those who suffer from anxiety that does not allow him or her to appropriately address their oral health care needs it is worth looking into further.
