Klonopin is a trade-name used for the Clonazepam group of drugs which is a derivative of the benzodiazepine group of drugs. The drugs main therapeutic uses are of an anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant and it has anxiolytic properties. But due to its potent strength it has been much abused and has been known to be used as a street drug. That the drug has been misused and has been continually done so, makes it even more important for us to find out what can be the side effects. This we will explore in the following section of the article.

Although the medical term for the drug is Clonazepam,Side Effects of Klonopin Articles it is most commonly referred to as Klonopin in the United States. In Chile, another country where the drug has been much abused, it is known as Ravotril. Klonopin has a whole range of side effects and these can range from anything between common ones to extremely rare ones. We will try and cover as many of the side effects as possible here.

Common Side Effects

The common side effects of Klonopin include drowsiness, a loss in the ability of cognition, difficulty in judging things, partial loss of memory (mostly of events that has happened recently), getting irritated, display of unnatural aggression, psychomotor agitation, inability to focus on things and a general lack of motivation, loss of sexual desire and in some cases the failure to get an erection, lack of control on bodily movements and impaired motor function, inability or lack of ability in coordination, impaired balance, dizziness. There are other common side effects as well such as increased somnambulism which we commonly refer to as sleepwalking (must be remembered that this is not something that happens new to the patient, but to someone who has already had a history of sleepwalking and the drug has been prescribed to tackle that), hallucinations, especially the auditory ones, impaired memory, anterograde amnesia (generally happens to those patients who have been prescribed a high dose).

There are a few other common side effects though these might happen to a comparatively lesser number of people. Many patients who have been under this drug have complained that they feel a sense of hangover. They often feel drowsy, complain of headaches, and are not in the best of moods when they have to wake up, especially true for those who had to take the medicine before they went to sleep. Much of this can be attributed to the potent nature of the drug that ensures that it has a long-lasting effect.

Less Common Side Effects

Some of the less common side effects of Klonopin are thrombocytopenia (low platelets count in the blood), increased dysphoria (a state of mind that is highly irritable and frustrated), extremely severe side effects on the mind and the body (some even have an increased suicidal tendency), an increase in seizures (for those who are treated for the same) or even an induction of seizures (in patients who had never complained of any), serious changes in the personality of the individual, and few behavioral disorders.

Rare Side Effects

Some of the side effects displayed by the drug Klonopin are extremely rare and if someone is experiencing such side effects he or she should immediately contact the doctor and seek his advice. These rare side effects include incontinence, psychosis, damage to the liver, extreme rage, paradoxical behavioral disinhibition (where the patient displays no inhibition to certain things which otherwise they will not be so casual about), intense excitement, and excessive impulsiveness. All these should be considered serious and expert medical opinion should be sought.
