Why do people snore? When in deep sleep the muscles in the roof of the mouth,Snoring Is a Disease: Factors that Contributes to Snoring Articles the throat, and the tongue relax. The relaxation of the throat’s tissues blocks the passage of air causing vibration.  The narrower and the bigger the obstruction on the airways, the more forceful the airflow will be. The vibration it will cause is higher causing loud snoring.

Here are some of the factors that may contribute to snoring:

Mouth’s anatomy: The mouth’s anatomy can be a factor in why people snore.  Some people have a narrow airway because they have low, thick soft palate. The narrow airways affect the passage of air especially when sleeping. People with elongated uvula or that triangular piece of tissue hanging from the soft palate may also obstruct the airflow and cause vibration producing that unnecessary sound when snoring. Some try to correct the snoring by putting chin straps to keep the chin intact and somehow regulate the flow of air.

Overweight: People who are obese or are above the average weight are prone to snoring. They may have extra tissues forming in the back of their throats and also some air passages. These tissues block the air and as the air bumps causes that growling-like sound.

Alcohol intake: Consuming too much alcohol especially before bedtime can cause loud snoring. The alcohol has substances that relax the muscles in the throat. It decreases natural defenses against possible blockage in the airway.

Nasal problems: Nasal congestions may cause snoring. The nasal passage is congested making it hard for the air to pass through. Nasal deformities like deviated nasal septum may also contribute to the snoring. Snore spray is one of the solutions some use to alleviate snoring during these times.

Serious sleep conditions: Snoring is often associated with a sleeping condition called sleep apnea where you partially stop breathing when your sleep. This is caused by a partial or complete obstruction in the passage of air in your nose and throat.

Sleeping position: The way you sleep can contribute to your snoring. Usually, people who sleep straight on their back are more prone to snoring than people who sleep with their sides. The kind of pillow you sleep on also contributes to the blocking of air passage causing loud snores. This is there are pillows that are designed with exact softness and thickness to help prevent snoring.

If snoring is a disease, there are a lot of remedies already available in the market. Snore spray, mouthpieces, and even rings are designed cure snoring.

Though snoring can be normal, it still needs proper attention as it can be a symptom of a more serious disease. If you think you are snoring too hard, it is good to consult your doctor for proper guidance.
