Strawberries Show Promise for Cancer Prevention

Researchers from Ohio State University found a compound in strawberries that may actually prevent and slow cancer from growing in the esophagus.

Modern medicine has always derived the raw materials for pharmaceutical drugs from nature, as nature provides delicate yet powerful ingredients for balance and wellness. Time and time again, be it academic researchers and scientists, or herbalists and medicine men, people discover a simple yet complex compound, found in something so common as a flower or vegetable, that creates the next novel prescription for health. Researchers from Ohio State University conducted a preliminary study which revealed that strawberries may actually prevent and slow cancer from growing in the esophagus.

After learning of successful animal studies that showed the benefits of strawberries, Tong Chen, the study's lead researcher, decided to test the theory on people. The study analyzed the use of freeze-dried strawberries in 36 men and women who had esophageal cancer. Freeze-dried strawberries were used in place of fresh ones because they contain higher amounts of beneficial flavonols and phytochemicals, and are about 10 times as concentrated as fresh strawberries. The results showed a decrease and a slowing in the growth of cancer cells in the esophagus in 29 out of 36 participants. Dr. Chen and her team do not know the exact compound in strawberries that fights cancer, but they are eager to conduct more studies.
