If you’ve been experiencing the above mentioned symptoms, talk to an internist. The condition of hyperthyroid in women affects several body functions and may lead to a serious bone problem, fertility problem, pregnancy problem, heart problem and thyroid storm.
To confirm the condition of the overactive thyroid condition, health experts do a diagnosis of hyperthyroid after physical examination, assessing signs and symptoms in an individual. Ultrasonography (USG) of the thyroid (a non invasive procedure), blood test (for measuring T3 and T4) and TSH are conducted.
After examining the thyroid condition, treatment option is decided. The treatment options for hyperthyroidism include:
* Anti-thyroid drugs, such as Propylthiouracil and Methimazole, which helps reduce hyperthyroid symptoms by preventing thyroid gland from producing the hormones in excess.* Beta blockers, such as Propanolol, helps treat heart palpitation and stabilise heart beat.* Radioactive iodine is given orally which gets absorbed by the gland. The course of radioactive iodine decreases the hyperthyroid symptoms in 3-6 months.* Surgery is the option when drugs and radioactive iodine prove ineffective.  In some of the cases of hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland has to be removed as it may affect other body parts. After removal of the thyroid gland surgery, it becomes essential to receive a medication to supply the thyroid hormone such as levothyroxine.
Learning about hyperthyroid symptoms and getting it diagnosed if there is any suspicion, as its signs and symptoms may worsen gradually over time. In most if the case, women either ignore subtle signs or don’t recognise the symptoms until they become more severe.
