When they came back to the market in the fall of 2006, the FDA attached a recommendation that if you get a silicon implant, you need to consider getting an MRI scan three years after the surgery and every two years after to monitor for hidden leaks. With silicone implants if you have a leak you may not be aware of it. This recommendation is somewhat controversial among plastic surgeons. Most surgeons have different ideas about monitoring breast implants status. In general the problem with leaking is fairly rare these days because the silicone gel is more cohesive than it used to be before and it is not leaving and running in separate little droplets .The cohesive gel tends to stay together when you have a leak or defect in the breast implants. Whenever a leak or defect on the shell occurs, the material doesn't tend to get outside the capsule, around the implant or into the breast tissue, but rather stays together. Whatever decision you make about the type of the breast implants you will chose, it is important not to rush into conclusions, take time to make all of the considerations into account and use your best judgment, because you will be living with that decision for the rest of your life. No one can decide for you, but before you do that you need to get very familiar with this subject.
